Infidelity is one of the top reasons couples seek out therapy. It is a complex issue that has immense implications and consequences that require considerable time and thought. In a recent study conducted by Jana Hackathorn and Brien K. Ashdown provides some insight on some of the motivational factors behind infidelity. The results found that individuals who reported feeling unsatisfied in their primary relationship were more likely to seek a secondary partner and that the secondary partner was not as big of an influence in their motivation to cheat. Additionally, the study found that there are many individual differences connected to their motives. For example, being male, having greater Christian identification and more comfort with casual sex were the best predictors for sexual motivations for infidelity. These findings suggests that it is important to understand why people feel compelled to cheat so that these issues can be addressed within the relationship.
